Having been in three pretty large guilds so far (between 30 - 60 members) I would like to move to a smaller guild with more active players and more teamwork, where people know each other better. I see nothing wrong with friends guilds who don't bother with GvG etc...
Guild alliances would be good, there is probably a thread on the site somewhere so I won't go any further into that.
For me /unsigned

It's a simple concept really. Ignore them.

In the past, smaller organisations have very often looked for bigger organisations to help them to succeed, but those organisations have their own problems and are looking for even bigger allies. In my opinion, this will become a problem in Factions, unless there is some good system.
Smaller guilds should be encouraged to join bigger ones by yes, rising sigil prices. I remember yonks ago when my small group of friends joined a slightly bigger guild and we actually managed to get the money together to pay 70k for a sigil. We did one or two guild battles, then the guild declined and fell apart. Though guilds are meant to be formed to adventure together and help each other, bigger guilds are the ones that have evolved and would be more useful. Also, adding more stuff to do as a guild would mean tiny little guilds really are disadvantaged. In the manual it says guilds were mighty organisations of, fighters/casters/whatever, that formed in their kingdom to work together and gain power. Then the guild wars came and they fought for dominance. IMO, a group of 6/7 friends or maybe even more isn't a mighty organisation, nor even much of a guild, it's just a bunch of friends with common interest.

Fact is, a great deal of small guilds are not really interested at all in this whole faction fighting thing. Now, of course, I don't know how exactly this factions thing works, but I don't imagine a small guild will have as much power as a larger one, especially if they don't PvP. If a small guild wants help in the factions, then they can consider merging with a bigger guild. Forcing ALL guilds to do such a thing is foolish, as not all guilds care about the whole faction thing.
I'm not sure what you mean by "adding more stuff to do as a guild would mean tiny little guilds really are disadvantaged." How do you say that? I can imagine they might be disadvantaged in raising enough money to buy cool new additions to their guild halls and such, but it's not at all necessary for their enjoyment of the small guild experience... so what's the point? Making the prices higher doesn't exactly solve the problem either. =D
It is true that the guilds mentioned in the lore are powerful organizations and such. What's to say there weren't smaller guilds as well? It's usually only the few largest and most powerful ones that get put down in the history books anyway.

Regarding the faction wars announced for Chapter 2. While I can't speak for sure---I don't think it will in any way "discriminate" against small guilds. Chances are, the two factions you can join will just go at it. The two large factions are probably Anet's response to people wanting an actual war---a large PvP system. I get the feeling in these faction wars your guild might not even play a large role, and you could probably participate in them as an individual. I seriously doubt Anet would create such a great sounding concept only to force people who enjoy small guilds to do otherwise, seriously doubt it.
I'll also ask that people keep this discussion clean of silly insults and other such things, it's not difficult to be nice and say something valid---if you can't resist the urge don't post.
